São Brás Festivities
Festa de São Brás: Tradition, Drums, and Devotion in the Heart of Trancoso
On February 3rd, the day after the Festa de Iemanjá, Trancoso continues its celebrations with the Festa de São Brás, the protector saint of the throat and a beloved figure in Brazil’s popular religious culture. It’s a day filled with music, tradition, and heartfelt community spirit, where locals and visitors come together to honor faith and heritage.
A Night of Rhythm and Togetherness
As evening falls, the sound of drums begins to echo through the village. The Quadrado lights up softly, neighbors gather, and tourists are warmly welcomed to join the local celebration. The atmosphere is festive yet intimate — with dancing, prayer, food, and joy shared openly.
It’s a unique chance to witness the fusion of sacred rituals and joyful popular traditions that define the cultural soul of Trancoso.
The Highlight: A New Carpet for the Quadrado
The most symbolic moment of the celebration comes at the end of the afternoon, when the men of the village place a new “carpet” (tapete) on the ground of the Quadrado, in front of the iconic white church. This simple yet powerful act represents spiritual renewal, community unity, and the continuation of ancestral customs passed down through generations.
